The Bowery
The Bowery
The Bowery
Oxjam 2009
I managed to get down the front for the magnificient Messrs. Foxx, who were on the Bowery’s glittering bill for the Oxjam festival. The Bowery’s always a good test of a band’s popularity, by noting how far back down the room the cheering, whooping and hollering goes. At this gig I noticed it’s started to go all the way back for the Foxxes.
The Bowery
Oxjam 2009
I arrived just in time to catch the end of The Occasional Flickers‘ slot at the Bowery end of the Oxjam night, which is why we’re a bit light on content here. Still, I did a better job of capturing these guys than I did for Meursault and YIFI, where I was stuck at the back of the room!
Oxfam Instore Appearance
Oxjam 2009
Neil Pennycook and Scott Hutchison, of Meursault and Frightened Rabbit respectively, launched this year’s Oxjam Festival with a very special collaborative instore show at the Oxfam shop on the Royal Mile. Dozens of fans were crammed into the tiny store to enjoy the show, which got the day off to a splendid start.
House Gig
Toad Hall
The second Toad House Gig was a resounding success, largely down to the skill and talent of two wonderfully compelling performers in Animal Magic Tricks and Men Diamler. Guest contributer Dianna has made a far more accomplished job of reviewing the show than I could over at Toad, so I suggest you go have a read post haste!
Toad Session
Toad HQ
The majestic Honeytrap recorded their Toad Session later on the same day as Found did theirs, so we’d all had a small glass of sweet sherry or two by the time recording started. I took some photos, evidently. However, rumours that I was singing along to Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush before the evening was out are greatly exaggerated.
Good News Album Launch
Featuring King Creosote, Jo Foster and Eagleowl
Withered Hand decided to bother the locals down at Leith Dockers’ Club to celebrate the release of their 17-starred, chart-topping (nearly) debut album, Good News (Buy it here. Now. It’s brilliant.) They were helped out on the night by a few good mates, including Jo Foster, Eagleowl and King Creosote. You don’t need me to tell you it was a fantastic night.
Cabaret Voltaire
Edinburgh
I actually ended up reviewing Jeffrey Lewis‘ recent Edinburgh show for Song, By Toad, so pop along there if you’d like to see what I thought. Cab Vol was rammed for this show and I kind of got wedged into a pretty rubbish position for photos, so I’m not completely happy with this set, but hey - one or two came out okay.
Chinatown
London
I had to go on a trip to London with work a couple of weeks back. Hmm.. how depressing. Well, that’s what I thought until I found out that the gorgeous Honeytrap were playing a gig just down the other end of Shaftesbury Avenue from my hotel while I was there. I’d first met the guys when they recorded a Toad Session on their last trip to Edinburgh, which will be the next in the series to be released, so I knew I was in for a good time. And a good time it was indeed!
The Wee Red Bar
Edinburgh
The magnificient Woodenbox managed to provide a sterling performance at the Wee Red bar, despite having dozens of people gathered at the front of the stage all dancing their backsides off! These guys really do have quite a fan club now, and if they keep things up the way they have been, it’s only going to get bigger.
