The Fence Collective

King Creosote, The Pictish Trail, Found, Player Piano

GRV, Edinburgh

We were treated to a triumphant post-Homegame hoe-down from a selection of Fence Collective luminaries at the GRV. Individually, the line-up was announced as Player Piano, Found, The Pictish Trail and King Creosote. However, they all spent so much time on stage with each other, as Fence traditions dictate, that it hardly seemed to matter! Great stuff.

Broken Records

The Bowery

Edinburgh

Broken Records somehow managed to cram all twenty-three band members and all their gear onto the stage at The Bowery, to cap off This Is Music’s third birthday party. The guy from The Guardian said this band won’t be playing small venues much longer, I’m not sure I entirely agree. Oh they’ll play bigger shows; but I think they enjoy these intimate little gigs far too much to ever give them up completely!

Rob St. John

The Bowery

Edinburgh

Rob St. John and co. opened up procedings for This Is Music’s third birthday celebration shenanigans at The Bowery, with a typically beguiling set of their delicously languid and engagingly considered music, before finishing up with a startling but brilliant four-to-the-floor rock wig-out. I always suspected Rob was hiding a secret inner Raaawk-God!

Found

Cabaret Voltaire

Edinburgh

Found’s turn on the Edinburgh leg of The Mill was crisp, sparkling, refreshing and deliciously cool, unlike the beer on offer. The delighted audience were left baying for more. Again, unlike the beer.

Homegame 2009

Slow Club were really one of my own personal highlights of Homegame ‘09. Their performance on Friday evening got the weekend off to a fantastic start for me. Warm, funny, unaffected and infectious, they had the audience wrapped around their little finger from the start. Luckily we got the chance to hang out with them for a bit on Saturday afternoon out on the breakwater while they made contributions to various blogs and websites, and they turned out to be lovely people, too! I didn’t have my SLR (as has been extensively documented), but I got these shots with my little point-and-click instamatic.

Homegame 2009

Friday

So this is pretty much all I got from Homegame 2009, a selection from the Friday night’s entertainment. I left my camera switched on overnight on the Friday night and so the battery was flat by Saturday morning. The moral of the story is of course; if you’re daft enough to disable the auto-shutdown feature on your camera, remember to take your charger with you!

Oh well, better luck next year hopefully!

Inspector Tapehead – Pherenzik Tear

17 04 2009

pherenziktearI was delighted when the lads from Inspector Tapehead asked to use one of my photos to decorate their new EP, Pherenzik Tear. The sleeve was designed by Richard Croasdale, and as you can see, he’s applied a bit of jiggery-pokery to the image and the results are really quite striking.  I’m well chuffed with it to be honest. The guys generously gave me a copy at the Homegame festival, and you couldn’t come near me without me proudly showing you the credit to Blueback Hotrod on the sleevenotes! Have a look at the original image here, and don’t forget to check out the band’s MySpace and have a wee listen to their tunes.

The Kays Lavelle

King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut

Glasgow

 The Kays Lavelle

The Kays Lavelle played an emotional gig at the legendary King Tut’s in Glasgow, as it was the last time Grant and Jake would be playing in the band. There’s a new album on the way and a new chapter in the Kays’ story is about to begin…

Jesus H Foxx

Sneaky Pete’s

Edinburgh

First time I’d caught the Jesus H Foxx show, and very good it was too. Looking forward to their forthcoming EP release.

Y’All Is Fantasy Island

Sneaky Pete’s

Edinburgh

Y’All Is Fantasy Island played a bright and lively set at Sneaky Pete’s. Unfortunately the photos came out a bit dark and blurry. I managed to salvage a few though.
