Edinburgh Music Library

The Link exhibition finale

The Link exhibition was a fascinating display, held in Edinburgh Music Library up on George IV Bridge, that linked music and visual art, and featured work from many prominent local artists in both fields. It culminated in an auction for much of the art on display, accompanied by a live performance from Player Piano and Found, members of which had contributed work to the exhibition. It turned out to be a very successful evening, raising £2,000 for Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland. Great stuff!

Toad New Year’s Eve House Gig

31 12 2009

Featuring Virgin Of The Birds and Broken Records

Toad Towers

Song, By Toad’s New Year’s party was a splendid way to see off the last decade, particularly as we were treated to up-close-and-personal sets from two acts who each had a big year in 2009. The evening kicked off with Jon from Seattle’s Virgin Of The Birds, a band who, with Ilona, You Should Still Be My Vampire Attendant, were responsible for one of the best songs of 2009. He was followed by local boys Jamie and Rory from Broken Records, who were having a well-earned festive break at home after a year which saw pretty much constant touring following the release of their debut album.

Toad’s got videos of the performances over there which you really should go and see. There’s one post for the Virgin Of The Birds videos , and a separate post for the Broken Records videos. They really are rather good.

The photos may look warm and cosy, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t all get ridiculously drunk later on to complete a night that saw in the new year in some style!

Toad Session

Penicuik Town Hall

We decided that when Shenandoah Davis paid us a visit from Seattle, that we should take the Toad Sessions on the road in order to find a proper piano for her to use.  We thought she deserved it. Luckily our friend Ben was able to pull some strings for us on Penicuik Town Council, and he secured us the piano in the town hall. The man’s a legend. Anyway, in between the driving, the skylarking, the frisbee-throwing, the pickled-egg-eating and the drinking, we managed to record her singing a few songs; and, as you will find out over on Song, By Toad, it was absolutely spellbinding.

Song, By Toad Christmas Panto

12 12 2009

The Bowery

Featuring Rob St. John, Ruth & Rory, Thomas Western, Inspector Tapehead and Jesus H. Foxx

Sorry, did I write ‘panto’? I meant to say ‘party’ of course. The pantomime didn’t start until much later that night. Early December seems like a very long time ago as I write this, which was when the annual opportunity to celebrate all things Toad with a stellar line-up of performers took place. Two of our favourite bards, Rob St. John and Thomas Western, silenced the bawdy boozehounds through in the bar, each with an equally captivating performance. While in the main gig room we were introduced to a fascinating new direction that Rory from Broken Records has been exploring, accompanied by Bowery boss and occasional Jesus H. Foxx vixen Ruth on the violin. Later Inspector Tapehead and the aforementioned Foxxsters took to the stage with brilliant full-band sets.

The evening was bloody fantastic, but it also had a hint of sadness to it, as it was the last night The Bowery as we know it would be in existence. Ruth and Jane have moved on to new things, and the unique and irreplaceable venue they worked so hard to create has been absorbed into the plans for the revamped Roxy Art House.

In its short lifetime, The Bowery became one of the most important hubs for the grassroots arts and music scene in Edinburgh, and one of the city’s best-loved venues. To many it just felt like home.

Ruth and Jane, and countless collaborators, worked hard to offer an unhesitating and inspiring helping hand to local acts, while bringing unexpected and amazing performers from further afield – often abroad – to the Edinburgh audience. It’s difficult to get that combination right, and these guys absolutlely nailed it.

It will be impossible to replace, but Ruth has promised that it won’t be last we hear from The Bowery, even if in future it’s not under the same roof; and, looking forward, it’s reassuring to learn that some reliable and familiar hands will be at the tiller of the new Roxy as it sets off on its own journey, hopefully making the most of the fantastic spaces and rooms the building has to offer.

But for now it’s probably best to raise a cocktail in a china tea-cup to Ruth and Jane, and to the brilliant memories they’ve left us with.

Avalanche Records in-store appearance

Edinburgh

Eagleowl made a special instore appearance at Avalanche Records in Edinburgh as part of the launchfest for new single Sleep The Winter. They squeezed the appearance in around launch parties in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and recording a Toad Session, all within a couple of days. That all added up to the most sightings of the elusive critter we’ve seen in a very long time!

Sleep The Winter single launch at The Bowery

Featuring Sparrow & The Workshop and Withered Hand

Eagleowl’s captivating new single, Sleep The Winter, was given a rousing launch at the Bowery, as part of the venue’s triumphant final weekend. Stalwart support was offered by Jill and Nick from Sparrow & The Workshop, and Dan from Withered Hand. (Regrettably I didn’t get any shots of Dan during his set as I was caught up in a sold-out-gig-with-one-person-left-all-alone-outside problem which was largely my fault). If you don’t already own a copy of the Sleep The Winter, I urge you to buy one now before they all sell out!

Roxy Art House

Edinburgh

Those lovely people at Ten Tracks booked a stormer for us upstairs in the main hall at the Roxy. Found have been away to Hamburg, and in the process lost a drummer and picked up a Hofner violin bass.  Nothing like that has ever happened before. Neil from Meursault performed solo, making more than enough noise to fill the cavernous hall, while new-ones-on-me Panda Su got the evening off to a sparkling start.

Featuring The Parsonage, Withered Hand, Aberfeldy, Meursault and Come On Gang!

Roxy Art House, Edinburgh

One of the evening’s highlights for me was definitely Scott’s karaoke version of Boombastic by Shaggy, but that’s a whole different story. Long before the night disintegrated into drunken caterwauling we were treated to some brilliant music from a glittering galaxy of stars, and it was all for charity. As you can see I managed to get some shots of The Parsonage, Withered Hand, Aberfeldy, Meursault and Come On Gang!, but there was even more on the bill that I missed. A great line-up, a fantastic night, well done to all concerned!

The Bowery

This is a bit of a departure for Blueback Hotrod, as there are no fuzzy-faced, sweaty musicians for you to look at. Instead, there are lots of wonderful, creative, crafty things to be amazed and inspired by. Presented by MarchéMarché at The Bowery, the event neatly showcased that there’s a lot more imaginative and creative stuff going on in Edinburgh than just boring old music, and it really was a pleasant way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

The Bowery

Oxjam 2009

I managed to get down the front for the magnificient Messrs. Foxx, who were on the Bowery’s glittering bill for the Oxjam festival. The Bowery’s always a good test of a band’s popularity, by noting how far back down the room the cheering, whooping and hollering goes. At this gig I noticed it’s started to go all the way back for the Foxxes.
